Peers back gay marriage law

THE HOUSE of Lords convincingly backed gay marriage yesterday evening, with an amendment designed to topple the bill opposed by more than two to one.

Peers, who were allowed a free vote on the issue, rejected an amendment from crossbencher Lord Dear by 390 votes to 148. The bill was passed with a majority of 205 in the Commons last month. Ministers are expected to tweak the legislation somewhat, with the UK’s first gay weddings expected next summer.
