DIAGEO’S outgoing boss Paul Walsh will be serving up meals rather than alcohol after catering giant Compass confirmed yesterday he will join the board as chairman.

Walsh is retiring as chief executive of the Guinness and Johnnie Walker owner at the end of June after almost 13 years during which he oversaw its growth into the world’s largest drinks company.

He will take over as non-executive chairman at Compass’ annual general meeting in February next year, when Sir Roy Gardner, who has been at the helm of the FTSE group since 2006, will retire.

Sir Ian Robinson, senior independent director at Compass said: “[Walsh’s] experience leading one of the UK’s largest international companies through a period of significant global expansion makes him an excellent choice and we look forward to his valuable contribution.”
