New Zealand hit 39-year low in South Africa

NEW Zealand were skittled out for just 45 on the first day of their series in South Africa, the lowest total in Test cricket since 1974.

The tourists were blown away in Cape Town by Vernon Philander, who took 5-7, Morne Morkel (3-14) and Dale Steyn (2-18), who picked up his 300th Test wicket. Only Kane Williamson reached double figures for New Zealand, who recorded the eighhth lowest score in Test history.

In response South Africa closed on 252-3, Alviro Peterson making a century, and Jacques Kallis becoming only the fourth batsman of all time to pass 13,000 runs.
