GRAND National-winning jockey Ryan Mania was recovering in hospital last night after suffering neck and back injuries less than 24 hours after his landmark victory.

Mania, who caused one of the National’s biggest upsets on 66-1 shot Auroras Encore on Saturday at Aintree, fell from another Sue Smith-trained mount, Stagecoach Jasper, yesterday at Hexham.

The 23-year-old Scot was treated for 30 minutes at the track before being airlifted to hospital in Newcastle, where his condition was described as stable.
