Minister discusses strikes clampdown
TRANSPORT Secretary Philip Hammond was reported last night to have held discussions with Mayor of London Boris Johnson about ways the coalition government may be able to avert a winter of discontent.
The two men are said to have examined proposals drawn up by the employers’ organisation the CBI to declare a strike illegal unless it is supported by 40 per cent of the total workforce.
The mayor has had experience of dealing with striking unions, having faced an RMT strike last year.
Unions such as the RMT and the Public and Commercial Services Union have threatened strike action as a means of opposing the proposed public spending cuts.
