Miliband threatens compulsory purchase for reluctant builders

LABOUR leader Ed Miliband will tomorrow threaten property developers with compulsory purchase orders if they do not push ahead with stalled housing projects.

Speaking at Labour’s National Policy Forum he will attack the construction industry for hoarding land at a time when there is an acute housing crisis and announce a policy review into the issue.

“All options should be on the table, including giving local authorities real power to say to the worst offenders that they should either use the land, or lose the land,” he will say.

“Permission to build should mean land-owners build.”

According to figures issued last September by the Local Government Authority planning permission has been granted for 400,000 UK homes that have not yet been built.
