McIlroy struggles go on in Ireland

GOLF: World No2 Rory McIlroy’s dreadful year continued yesterday at the Irish Open, where the two-time Major winner finished seven shots off the lead after carding a two-over first round of 74. A return to more familiar terrain failed to inspire the Ulsterman, who shot two birdies and four bogies, while Irishman and 2009 winner Shane Lowry set the pace, despite a bogey at the first, with a 67. McIlroy said: “It wasn’t the greatest day and there are no aspects of my game that are really strong at the moment.”
