Lay of the day

Star Sports owner Ben Keith picks out one horse he’s happy to lay each day

WE must have sponsored nearly 20 different Cheltenham Festival Preview nights this year. The horse on everyone’s lips at almost every one was the Willie Mullins-trained Neptune Hurdle hotpot PONT ALEXANDRE.

I keep hearing how he’s the apple of Ruby Walsh’s eye and, by all accounts, that he thinks he could be even better than Denman. However, didn’t Denman get beaten in this very race? True, he wasn’t defeated for another three years after that – but as a bookmaker you simply have to take horses like this on.

As for Sprinter Sacre, I’m not sure whether the punters on or off course will be in a hurry to back him at around 1/4, and that’s why we’ve decided to dangle a little carrot. If you back him with us, we’ll give you your money back if he falls (up to £5000). Remember, that’s ‘falls’, so I don’t want any moaning if he’s pulled-up, runs out, refuses or anything else!

If you’re going to Cheltenham today or later in the week, wrap up warm and come and see us at the number 3 pitch in the Tattersalls. If you’re staying in the office, call us on 08000 521 321 or visit
