ITALY’S unemployment rate has reached a 36-year high, soaring to 12 per cent in April.

11.9 per cent of people were recorded as out of work the previous month, revised from 11.5 per cent.

Economists had predicted a slight increase from the unrevised figure, to 11.6 per cent.

The third largest economy in the Eurozone has been hit hard by the region’s financial crisis and is battling its longest recession in over two decades.
