Iron Man holds on to box office top spot despite Gatsby open

DESPITE huge anticipation around Baz Luhrmann’s version of the Great Gatsby, Iron Man 3 was back at the top of movie charts in the US and Canada over the weekend, beating out a strong debut for the lavish Jazz Age drama.

Coming off a gigantic opening a week earlier, Iron Man 3 pulled in $72.5m in ticket sales from Friday to yesterday in its second weekend.

Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as millionaire Jay Gatsby in the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald tale, earned a strong $51.1m, according to studio estimates.

Domestic ticket sales for Iron Man 3 dropped 58 per cent from a week earlier, when the film hauled in $174.1m for the second-biggest movie opening of all time.

The Great Gatsby will be released in UK cinemas on Thursday 16 May.
