Insights from London’s best trading conference

From the basics of forex to advanced technical analysis, experts meet to discuss market prospects for 2013 and beyond

CITY A.M.’s annual Active Trader conference, sponsored by IG, gathered together traders and market experts at the Grange Tower Bridge Hotel last Friday morning. A full day of talks finished with a champagne reception sponsored by FXCM.

The list of distinguished speakers included our very own Allister Heath, trading guru Lex Van Dam (pictured left), IG market experts David Jones and Brenda Kelly, Paul Staines of the Guido Fawkes blog, and ex-Dragons’ Den star and angel investor Richard Farleigh.

In his keynote speech, Heath opened the conference with an overview of the drivers behind the recent market turbulence. The audience was left in no doubt that the future will be volatile for traders, making this gathering of market luminaries all the more timely.

Lex Van Dam, second on the bill, encouraged members of the audience to find their own trading style, rooted in personal lifestyle, rather than imitating the routines of others. David Jones of IG struck a similar theme later in the morning, emphasising that investors should not always aim to monitor prices minute-by-minute; for some, long-term trades may work better. As one attendee remarked, “the panel discussion was very stimulating, with the speakers informing the audience about the best way to react to continued uncertainty.”

In the words of another audience member, “the event highlighted the plethora of views and methods available to traders. I feel better-equipped to tackle what will clearly be a volatile investment environment this year.”
