UNILEVER, the consumer conglomerate, posted weaker-than-expected third quarter sales yesterday after a cold spring compared to last year hit sales of its ice-cream brands, which include Magnum and Wall’s.

The FTSE group, which also owns brands including Dove soap and Marmite, posted a 4.9 per cent rise in underlying sales in the three months to the end of March, missing analyst expectations of 5.6 per cent.

Unilever said a tough competitive environment in Europe had dragged underlying sales in the region down by 3.1 per cent while sales in emerging markets jumped 10.4 per cent.
