Housing starts in the US drop 16.5 per cent

US DATA continued to point to soft spots in the recovery, yesterday.

The number of new houses that began to be built in the year to April slumped to 853,000, down 16.5 per cent on March’s estimate.

And the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits climbed last week at the fastest pace in six months, up 32,000 to a seasonally adjusted 360,000.
