SOCIALIST President Francois Hollande’s government contains eight millionaires according to figures published yesterday.
The revelations were intended as part of a new programme of transparency aimed at showing up the government’s falling popularity ratings in the wake of a scandal around Swiss bank accounts. But the plan appears to have backfired, attracting more unwanted attention for the politicians.
A scandal erupted around former budget minister Jerome Cahuzac after it emerged he had an undeclared Swiss bank account. He has been charged with tax fraud.
The new figures show foreign minister Laurent Fabius has €6.5m (£5.5m), closely followed by junior minister Michele Delaunay with a fortune of €5.4m.
Next in line are labour minister Michel Sapin with €2m and health minister Marisol Touraine with €1.4m.
Hollande himself had already declared wealth of €1.17m.
