TRAFFIC at London’s Heathrow airport was at its highest ever March level last month, with 5.9m passengers going through the hub, up 3.9 per cent on the previous year.
The airport’s operator said this was largely down to more routes to China, with traffic up 15.1 per cent, and more people escaping the unseasonably cold weather for sunnier climes in southern Europe.
Traffic to Italy was up 19.4 per cent and France was up 18.9 per cent, although Greece was down 21.1 per cent on the previous March.
Heathrow said the increase was down to planes being fuller than ever, with 75.8 per cent of plane seats full in March, up from 73.4 per cent a year previously.
Middle Eastern traffic was up 9.2 per cent, while North America was up a modest 1.4 per cent.
