Heathrow hub questioned

HEATHROW’S role as the UK’s central hub for air travel was undermined yesterday after an influential commission said airline alliances could base themselves at alternative airports without hitting passengers.

In a consultation paper yesterday, the Airports Commission said: “If any of the alliances … opted to relocate to either Gatwick, Luton or Stansted, theoretically this would not result in substantial connectivity losses to passengers.”
