Heathrow could be closed if rival chosen as a super-hub

HEATHROW airport would have to close if a so-called super-hub airport is built at either Stansted or by building a new airport in the middle of the Thames Estuary, a report by an influential think tank warned yesterday.

The study by the Independent Transport Commission backed a single hub airport to meet the growing air capacity crisis, but said if this was not Heathrow it would have to be shut down to reassure investors that airlines would use the new hub.

However, the think tank appeared to favour Heathrow, noting that it already had good connections to London and the rest of the UK, and that it would be quicker to redevelop.

“Investing in our aviation infrastructure is a critical challenge that must be met if the UK is to maintain investment from growing economies such as China and India,” it said.
