The great summer cover up
Has the weather left you in a sartorial quandary? Naomi Mdudu rounds up the top jackets to keep you cool and stylish this summer
WITH bad summers year after year, we’re not a nation used to dressing for the heat. It’s no surprise, then, that the murky weather left behind after temperatures hit a record high this month has left many in a dilemma, especially where outerwear is concerned. What do you wear when it might be sunny or it might pour down with an unholy vengeance?
The key is to focus on fabrics. Jackets should be a light cover-up; you don’t want something weighing you down. Cagoules are perfect for that reason; they tend to be light enough to be rolled into a bag when the weather permits without you worrying about it creasing. Practicality is key; keep things waterproof and opt for something with a hood to make sure you’re kept dry during bursts of rain.
Final tip: stay away from black. Aside from the fact it absorbs heat – so will leave you feeling hotter – there are loads of great block colour options, like Orlebar Brown’s bright red jacket (pictured) that are bright and cheery for summer and will still be relevant come winter.
