CITY broker FinnCap has moved to within a whisker of catching Cenkos Securities to top a table of brokers with the most number of Aim-listed clients, a study released today reveals.

FinnCap, chaired by private equity stalwart Jon Moulton, boosted its roster of small and medium sized clients from 74 to 79 over the quarter – nudging it to second place from third to put it one client behind Cenkos Securities in terms of overall Aim client numbers.

Cenkos, led by chief executive Jim Durkin, has held on to the top spot for the second consecutive quarter after boosting its client base from 77 to 80 over the past three months. The firm also moved up from fourth spot to number one in a table of clients by size of market cap.

FinnCap’s surge pushed out Canaccord Genuity in the overall client table from second spot to third but it dominated the FTSE Aim 100 and Aim 50 lists, topping both tables with 17 clients and 12 clients respectively.

The report, compiled by fund data firm Morningstar, also saw Grant Thornton, led by chief executive Scott Barnes, hold onto the crown in the audit sector, with 167 clients, down six from last quarter. KPMG held into second spot after adding a single client over the quarter.
