EUROPEAN champion Robbie Grabarz continued his breakthrough season by adding Olympic bronze to his medal collection in Britain’s only track success of last night.
Grabarz, competing at his first Games, cleared 2.25m and 2.29m with ease but could not keep his heels clear in three attempts at 2.33 as Ukrainian Ivan Ukhov’s leap of 2.38 took gold. “It seems like fiction to me. It’s incredible – I’m really proud,” said the 24-year-old from Enfield.
“If someone had said I’d get bronze at London 2012 I’d have bitten their hand off.”
Discus thrower Lawrence Okoye came last in the final while fellow Briton Tiffany Porter failed to reach the women’s 100m hurdles final, won by Australia’s Sally Pearson in an Olympic record 12.35 seconds.
