Gove wants to up school day

EDUCATION secretary Michael Gove yesterday called for a longer school day and an end to lengthy summer holidays in order to improve teaching standards.

“The structure of the school term and the school day was designed at a time when we had an agricultural economy,” he told The Spectator’s education conference.

Gove wants schools to stay open until 4.30pm and cut the summer break to just four weeks in order to compete with Asian nations.
