Glencore sacks staff

MINER trader Glencore Xstrata yesterday announced that it had sacked 1,000 workers across three of its chrome mines in South Africa for going on illegal strike last week, bringing those operations to a standstill.

The strike, which started last Tuesday, is still continuing, but supplies to customers have not yet been affected, according to Christopher Tsatsawane, a spokesman for the company's chrome operations.

The dispute has added to the high tensions in the mining industry amid labour negotiation season.
