Garden bridge to span Thames

BORIS Johnson yesterday unveiled ambitious plans for London’s first new bridge in a decade.

The so-called garden bridge will feature flowers, trees and plants, and will span the Thames from Victoria Embankment to South Bank to provide a new walking route from Waterloo to Covent Garden.

The mayor said the design, by London Olympic cauldron designer Thomas Heatherwick and Arup, would create an “iconic piece of green infrastructure” in the capital.

Set to be opened in 2016, the bridge is dependent on securing the £60m in funds required to build it from the private sector.
