Garcia gifts Fifth Major to rival Woods after big blunder at 17

WORLD No1 Tiger Woods won his war with rival Sergio Garcia last night after clinching the Players Championship at Sawgrass when the Spaniard shot a cataclysmic quadruple bogey on the 17th hole.

The pair traded insults after round three following a difference of opinion over a perceived lack of sportsmanship by Woods on hole two, leading Garcia to state: “We don’t enjoy each other’s company.”

Woods and Garcia were tied alongside Sweden’s David Lingmerth on 11 under-par in the final round, but birdies on the 16th saw the pair pull clear to seemingly set up a straight shootout.

However, on the iconic 17th hole – a short par three with the green surrounded by water – Garcia twice found the hazard and a seven saw him throw away the chance to win golf’s “Fifth Major”.

Woods made back-to-back pars to win for the fourth time this year.
