Fresh jobless high in France

THE number of unemployed people in France hit an all-time peak in April, up 1.2 per cent to 3.26m. It was the 53rd month in the last five years in which joblessness has increased.

Francois Hollande, the President of France, had promised to reduce unemployment on being elected just over a year ago. Unemployment has increased by 11.5 per cent since the vote last May.

A record low in consumer confidence was also recorded in France this week. A shrinking economy in late 2012 and the first quarter of 2013 sent the country into recession again recently.
