French unemployment rises to 3.2 million

FRENCH unemployment hit a record high of 3.2 million people last month, according to statistics from the International Labour Organisation.

The new figure is 11.5 per cent higher year-on-year and 1.2 per cent higher month-on-month.

The research follows yesterday’s news that the number of people out of work in Spain had soared to over six million.

The data has triggered a debate over whether Europe’s austerity drive is working and whether there should be some easing of cuts.
