Focus on: Bexley

Despite lying on the southeast outer edge of Greater London, Bexley is proving popular with commuters due to excellent transport links into central London.

Despite living further out, residents get a lot for their money; house prices are significantly lower than in prime central London but houses are considerably bigger.

There are two main parts of the area: Old Bexley, which still has the appearance of a village, and a more suburban side of the town, which houses the main town centre.

The area is known for its top performing grammar schools, which makes it an attractive location for families with young children who want to be within the catchment area.

“Bexley is a quiet and tranquil place with quality restaurants and village pubs,” says Alan de Maid Chislehurst branch manager Peter Batty. “The town attracts buyers who are migrating from more central London areas for the abundance of good primary and secondary schools, in particular those which follow the grammar system.”

Bexley also benefits from being surrounded by parkland and historic houses. Residential properties in the area are predominately thirties semi-detached or detached houses but there are also a few Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses in Old Bexley. Since the sixties, a variety of modern flats have been created too.

“The majority of people who move into the area are professional couples and those with young families taking their second step on the property ladder and once they settle there, they don’t tend to leave.”
