MAJOR European retailers, including Sweden’s Hennes & Mauritz and Spain’s Inditex, which owns Zara, have backed an accord to improve garment industry safety in Bangladesh.

The proposed contract – which would improve labour safety conditions in Bangladesh - follows the collapse of a garment factory in the Asian country three weeks ago, which killed over 1,100 people.

A number of European retailers have supported the accord, which is led by the International Labour Organisation and other lobby groups.

However, US retailers including Gap have declined to sign the initiative.
