EU’s Ashton calls for calm in Egypt

The European Union’s foreign policy chief met Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi yesterday to encourage the country's feuding political leaders to work together to tackle mounting economic and political problems. “This is a critical time for Egypt's transition,” Catherine Ashton said before the talks. Her visit comes as Egypt conducts long-delayed negotiations with the IMF on a $4.8bn (£3.1bn) loan needed to cope with a growing economic crisis.
