England jet to Austria for training
ENGLAND arrived for their pre-World Cup training camp in Austria on schedule yesterday, despite fears the ash cloud would delay their trip.
Fabio Capello and a 24-man party were given the green light to travel to Irdning, near Salzburg, after air travel restrictions were lifted.
The only players from the provisional 30-man squad Capello named last week who did not travel were the five involved in Saturday’s FA Cup final – David James, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole – plus Gareth Barry, who is recovering from injury.
England’s base was chosen because it allows the squad to undertake altitude training before the tournament in South Africa, where some matches will be played far above sea level.
The squad will return to England for a friendly against Mexico at Wembley on Monday, before flying back to Austria for more training and a warm-up match against Japan.
