David Wachman’s improving Duntle set to land her second Royal Ascot success

THE Irish could be in for a very good start to the second day of the meeting as they have the likely favourite in the first two events. The Group Two Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (3.05pm) has attracted a decent looking bunch of fillies and none more interesting than David Wachman’s DUNTLE.

This daughter of Danehill Dancer was a ready winner of the Sandringham Handicap last year and has done nothing but improve since then. She technically beat Chachamaidee in the Group One Matron Stakes at Leopardstown last September, before being cruelly disqualified for causing some marginal interference. She reappeared last month in the Group Three Amethyst Stakes and you couldn’t fail to be impressed with the way she put the race to bed.

She is clearly improving and I think she will have too much for this afternoon’s rivals. Take the 5/2 available with Ladbrokes.

The layers again look to have got it right at the top of the market because Lady Cecil’s Chigun is the obvious threat to the selection. She was beaten a short-head by one of today’s rivals, Dank, on her seasonal reappearance, but then comfortably took the Group Three Abu Dhabi Stakes at the Curragh last month.

The daughter of Oasis Dream is another highly progressive filly and she won really well over course and distance last season, so has to be in the mix at 3/1 with Paddy Power. Sir Michael Stoute has won this three times in the race’s nine year history so the aforementioned Dank has to be respected. She has been given a break since her Newmarket win and is another course and distance winner, so could represent a little bit of value at around the 5/1 mark.

Thistle Bird was an impressive winner at Epsom last time and she is another filly who could make her presence felt. I always make a point of looking out for any horse Alain De Royer-Dupre brings over to these shores so Sarkiyla has to be of interest at 9/1 with Paddy Power.

She has really strong form and it would be no surprise to see her run a really big race here. Duntle is my win selection, but if you are looking for an each-way bet it might be French raider Sarkiyla.
