Conservatives’ conservatories

HOMEOWNERS will be able to build conservatories and house extensions of up to eight metres without planning permission, under plans passed by the House of Commons yesterday.

Conservative communities secretary Eric Pickles faced down Labour opposition and a backbench rebellion from within his own party to push through the plans by 286 votes to 259.

However, he pledged to find a compromise that suits the rebels, who want local councils to be able to opt out of the plans.
