CONFERENCE WHISPERS

Boris for Tory leader?
If his conference schedule is anything to go by, the Mayor certainly fancies his chances. Before his speech this morning, he met workers at a factory in Manchester, ostensibly because the plant makes axles for London buses. But it is almost unheard of for a Mayor of London to visit to a regional factory; that’s the kind of visit the Prime Minister or chancellor would usually take care of. Maybe Boris is looking to life after the Mayoralty.

Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door
Odd choice of music to tee up George Osborne’s speech yesterday. First up was Bob Dylan’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door. Lord knows the Tories need a divine intervention, but reading between the lines suggests Osborne’s had enough. “Mama take this badge from me / I can’t use it anymore / It’s getting too dark to see.” Next up were the Black Eyed Peas with Meet me Halfway, which had a message for all those activists calling for tax cuts. “Ooh, I can’t go any further than this”.
