Clegg defeats childcare reform

NICK Clegg has vetoed the government’s plan to allow childminders to look after more toddlers, saying he was unconvinced that it would drive down costs for parents.

The Deputy Prime Minister blocked the proposals at the eleventh hour, saying they had been “roundly criticised by parents, providers and experts alike”.

Rule changes would have allowed each adult to care for six two-year-olds, rather than the existing four.
