Change effortlessly into the new season

Try these items to lighten up your wardrobe before summer arrives.

THE sun may have graced us with its presence but, despite the flurry of people stripping down to shorts and sleeveless tops over the weekend, it’s not summer just yet. This period of seasonal transition can make getting your wardrobe right difficult.

The rails tend to be lined with winter items on sale or full of summery pieces you can’t wear yet. But don’t despair: the success of resort lines, which drop in October and act as a buffer between the autumn/winter and spring/summer collections, means that most of the big brands have something for this changeable time of year.

Richard James has it mastered. The tailoring maestro has updated his signature suits and shirts by offering them in summer pastels and neutral shades in super lightweight fabrics like linen to make sure you look smart as the weather improves.

Give your winter coat a break and invest in a trench coat instead. It is the go-to piece between seasons for a reason. It’s the perfect item to wear over summery pieces to keep warm on chilly days without being too heavy. Even better, it packs into a bag easily, with minimal creasing if the sun does come out. But if you want to ditch a jacket altogether, opt for quality knitwear like a v-neck jumper from Etro or a smart cardigan from Paul Smith or John Smedley.

With shoes, trade Oxfords and brogues for penny loafers. They’re just as smart but more weather appropriate.
