BAE Systems confirmed yesterday that Sir Roger Carr will succeed Dick Olver as chairman next year, leaving fellow FTSE 100 giant Centrica searching for a new chair.

Carr has been at energy firm Centrica for 10 years and was until recently the president of business lobbying group CBI.

He will step down as chairman of Centrica on or before its annual meeting in 2014.

Centrica is starting a search for a new chairman, led by senior independent director Mary Francis.

“[Carr’s] skills, reputation and relationships with investors and government ministers will be of considerable value to the company both at home and abroad,” said Nick Rose, senior independent director at BAE Systems.

He will become chairman designate on 1 October.
