BRITAIN’S Mark Cavendish is good enough to break the record for the highest number of Tour de France stage wins, according to British Cycling president Brian Cookson.
Having taken the red jersey – awarded for the most stage wins – in Sunday’s climax to the Giro d’Italia, Cavendish was yesterday tipped for the record books.
“He has certainly got a good chance of overtaking the great Eddy Merckx during his career,” Cookson said, referring to Merckx’s record of 34 Tour de France stage victories.
Cavendish has 23 Tour de France stage wins under his belt. The 2013 Tour begins on 29 June on the island of Corsica.
