NOT CONVINCED BY THE JAGUAR XJ? HERE ARE SOME ALTERNATIVES:
BMW 740d SE, £65,305
BMW’s 3.0-litre diesel 7-series offers a little more power (313bhp) than the Jag but also comes with eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s quicker (0-62mph takes just 5.5 seconds), cleaner (149g/km CO2) and more economical (49.6mpg). There is a cheaper 730d model available but it’s less sporty.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class 350 BlueTec, £61,435
This 3.0-litre V6 diesel version is the UK’s most popular Mercedes-Benz S-Class. With combined economy of 45.6mpg and 164g/km of CO2 emissions, its 0-62mph acceleration figure of 7.1 seconds makes it the slowest car in this round-up. But it’s cavernous, comfortable and packed with safety tech. It is also the least expensive car here.
Porsche Panamera Diesel, £62,134
Porsche’s Panamera Diesel is also served by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine but with a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds, progress can feel a little slow. It is also less economical (43.5mpg) and emits more CO2 (172g/km). The boot is smaller than those found in the other cars included here but the interior is magic and you do get to bathe in the Porsche stardust.
