US bookies are often accused of being a cold-hearted bunch, but I promise you, even though it will cost the betting industry millions, if Kauto Star wins the Gold Cup today we’ll be cheering just as much as the punters. Best Mate was admired for his three Gold Cup wins a few years ago, but Kauto Star enjoys pure unadulterated love from the public. If he wins his third title today, you won’t just hear the roar around Cheltenham, you’ll hear it all the way up in Ayr as well.
Unfortunately, I think he might come up just short. Even though Kauto had the injury scare in the run up to the race, he is better this year than last. Long Run on the other hand hasn’t had everything go to plan this year but managed to win on his prep run in a really good time.
Last year Long Run outstayed both Kauto Star and Denman and he may well have Kauto’s measure again. However, I think Long Run’s stable companion Burton Port is worth a decent bet.
His comeback run after a long layoff was very impressive and he should see the trip out well. Barry Geraghty, who is absolutely flying this week, reckons he could have beaten Long Run on that comeback and will be on board again. I can guarantee you he won’t mind being the party pooper!
