Burberry sales rise on strong China growth

BURBERRY said rising demand for its luxury leather goods and signature raincoats in China helped the company hit annual sales of £2bn for the first time.

Sales in China jumped 20 per cent in the year to 31 March thanks to events such as Chinese new year, driving overall revenues up by eight per cent in the period, the group reported yesterday.

The group, which issued a profit warning last September after a slowdown in Chinese sales over the summer, said there is still “a thirst” for luxury goods in China.

Chief executive Angela Ahrendts said: “Every demographic coming out of China still tells us...that the metrics are there and it still should continue to be one of the fastest growing countries in the world.”
