DEFENCE giant BAE Systems is expected to announce Sir Roger Carr as its new chairman as soon as this week.

Sir Roger, who steps down from his role as president of the CBI during the trade body’s annual meeting today, has been seen as the frontrunner to replace Dick Olver for several months.

He is the former chairman of Cadbury and chair of energy group Centrica, a position he is expected to leave following his appointment to BAE.

It is understood that Invesco fund manager Neil Woodford, who had called on Olver to quit last year after the company’s failed merger with EADS, is supportive of Sir Roger’s appointment.

BAE declined to comment on the progress of its search for a chairman yesterday. The hunt for Olver’s replacement was led by senior independent director Nick Rose.
