ENGLAND outcast Nick Compton says he was not given a fair chance to demonstrate his ability before being dropped for Joe Root ahead of next week’s first Ashes Test.

“I don’t feel that I had a fair crack of the whip,” said Compton, who hit 79 for Worcester yesterday in their four-day match with Australia.

“I feel like this was a very good response actually. [England coach] Andy Flower said go away and score runs. I have done that. How many runs is scoring runs?”

England spinner Graeme Swann took five wickets as they completed a 228-run victory over Essex in their final pre-Ashes warm-up game.

Swann took 5-58 in 20.3 overs, easing fears of an elbow injury as England bowled Essex out for 186.
