Austin strikes to spare QPR on night of shocks

STRIKER Charlie Austin marked his full debut with a goal to help Queens Park Rangers beat League Two minnows Exeter City 2-0 on a night of shocks for Championship clubs in the Capital One Cup first round.

Austin, a £4m signing from Burnley, netted in the third minute turning in former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas’s initial shot.

And another summer signing, defender Danny Simpson, hit his first goal for the R’s after the break to ensure manager Harry Redknapp’s side progressed.

However, four Championship sides were dumped out of the competition to lower league opposition, most notably 2004 winners Middlesbrough, who lost 2-1 at home to Accrington Stanley and 10-man Brighton who suffered a 3-1 defeat after extra time to Newport County, playing in their first League Cup tie for 25 years following their promotion to League Two.

There were also defeats for Ipswich, who went down 2-0 at Stevenage and Sheffield Wednesday who lost 2-1 away at local rivals Rotherham.

League One Wolves were beaten 1-0 by Morecambe, while last season’s runners-up Bradford lost 2-1 at neighbours Huddersfield.

Two goals from Kevin Lisbie saw Leyton Orient progress 3-2 against 10-man Coventry City, while Dagenham & Redbridge, who have never won a League Cup tie, lost 3-2 to League One Brentford.

Meanwhile, Watford, Charlton and Millwall all made it safely through from round one.
