ARM chips overtake Intel in tablets and PCs

THE BOOM in demand for tablets may see British microchip designer ARM Holdings overtake US behemoth Intel in combined sales of tablet and personal computer chips for the first time.

Ian Drew, the Cambridge based company’s head of marketing and business development told City A.M. that this year more tablets and PCs will be sold featuring technology from ARM – which makes money by selling its chip designs to manufacturers – than those from its major rival.

The FTSE 100 constituent leapfrogging Intel illustrates the seismic shift in consumer behaviour as sales of tablets such as Apple’s iPad skyrocket while demand for PCs shrinks. Intel still dominates sales of chips for PCs, while ARM has a leading position in tablets and smartphones.
