SSE figures were in line with expectations, with the bad weather helping the numbers offset by higher costs. With no material changes in industry electricity costs that side should remain unchanged but the company will try to get prices up on the back of higher gas prices in the cold weather.

The results were in line with our expectations. We expect SSE to be able to deliver ongoing earnings growth from its investment in regulated networks and wind farms. This should support the target of delivering real dividend growth. However, ongoing increases in end-user prices will be needed.

SSE’s results showed an increase in profits, but it was recently fined £10.5m for mis-selling. Its figures are bound to see a number of outraged politicians comment on the profit margins being run by the firm, and will no doubt increase the general distrust of energy-providing companies.
