READING are today expected to name former Southampton boss Nigel Adkins as their new manager and task him with saving them from the drop in just eight games.
Adkins, who was sacked by the Saints in January despite leading them from League One into the Premier League, is poised to replace Brain McDermott, who was dismissed earlier this month.
The Royals lie second from bottom of the top flight, seven points from safety, and travel to Arsenal on Saturday for what is set to be Adkins’ first match in charge.
Reading failed in an attempt to lure former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet from Brighton, despite the Championship club granting permission for talks last week.
Adkins, 48, joined Southampton from Scunthorpe in 2010 and led them into the top tier with successive promotions but was replaced by Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino two months ago.
