LABOUR is to call a vote in parliament next week in a bid to ban letting agents from charging tenants high fees.

The party will table an amendment to the consumer rights bill on Tuesday in which they will seek to get rid of the charges, with the support of the other political parties.

Labour leader Ed Miliband said: “If the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats support us on Tuesday we can make this happen now.”

But the Conservatives are unlikely to support the bid, with housing minister Kris Hopkins warning that the policy is a political gimmick “designed to grab headlines, that in the long-term would hurt people who rent.”
