PARALYMPIC star Oscar Pistorius has told of the moment he broke down his bathroom door and discovered the lifeless body of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius, who denies murder and says he repeatedly fired gunshots through the door because he thought an intruder was on the other side, recalled the incident as his trial continued yesterday.
The South African said he screamed while forcing his way into the bathroom with a cricket bat, but stopped once he saw Steenkamp at his feet.
“I was heartbroken, overcome with sadness,” he told a Pretoria court. “I crouched down over her and I checked to see if she was breathing or if she had a pulse.”
Prosecutor Gerrie Nel put it to Pistorius that he murdered the 29-year-old model and law graduate in the early hours of Valentine’s Day last year following a row.
“You fired four shots through the door whilst knowing that she was standing behind the door,” Nel said. “She was locked into the bathroom and you armed yourself with the sole purpose of shooting and killing her.”
“That is not true,” Pistorius replied.
Defence lawyer Barry Roux later showed the court a Valentine’s card from Steenkamp to Pistorius, which he did not open before her death and contained the message: “I think today is a good day to tell you that I love you.”
