THE GOVERNMENT will introduce plain packaging for cigarettes in England after a review of the public health benefits found it would discourage children from taking up the habit. Public health minister Jane Ellison announced the plans yesterday in a statement in parliament.

A spokesman for British American Tobacco said: “We don’t see how the UK government could justify implementing this policy,” adding that it would contravene UK and EU laws.
