31st JANUARY: Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards shows his jumping skills in Holborn, London, before heading off to Calgary for the 1988 Winter Olympics to become the first competitor to represent Great Britain in the Olympic ski-jumping. Despite finishing last in both the 70m and 90m events, Eddie The Eagle became one of the stars of the Games; the press nicknamed him Mr Magoo, and organising committee president Frank King said at the closing ceremony: “At these Games, some competitors have won gold, some have broken records, and some of you have even soared like an eagle.” Picture: COLORSPORT/Andrew Cowie
